I am a journalist and a writer. As a journalist I worked in – or for – some of the most important Brazilian newspapers, such as O Globo, Folha de São Paulo, O Estado de São Paulo and Jornal do Brasil. After Jornal do Brasil, I began to write in a Brazilian web site dedicated to art, literature and music: Aguarras (ISSN 1980-7767) and now I transfered my articles do Etudes Lusophones, a Sorbonne IV site dedicated to cultural studies.
As a writer I began my carrier with children books, receiving some of the most important awards of the Brazilian publishing industry, such as the “Jabuti” (awarded by the Brazilian Chamber of Books), and the award of the São Paulo Association of Art Critics. I also received more than ten awards of the Brazilian branch of IBBY (International Board of Books for Young People). And also an award of the Noma Institute, from Japan. A text addressed to young adults, that I wrote many years ago, will be published soon as a graphic novel with my drawings.
But I dedicate myself to literary fiction. “Nada a dizer” (“Nothing to say”) is my last published book. It received the Literary Fiction Award from the Academia Brasileira de Letras. In June 2012, Companhia das Letras will publish “O que deu para fazer em matéria de história de amor” (“What could be done about love stories”).
One of my novels, “Às seis em ponto” (“At six a.m., sharp”, Companhia das Letras, 1998, 128 p.), received a literary award, the City of Belo Horizonte Award. An analysis of this book with the spanish translation of some of its pages was published in the magazine “Espéculo, Revista de Estudios Literarios” (number 14, march/2000), of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. Other of my novels, “Coisas que os homens não entendem” (“Things men don’t understand”, Companhia das Letras, 2002, 160 p.) was translated to Swedish by Örjan Sjögren and published by Tranan.
“O assassinato de Bebê Martê” (“Baby Marty’s murder”) is one of my novels that has a screenplay wrote upon it. In 2004 I published another novel, “A um passo” (“Almost there”), by Lamparina. In 2006 Companhia das Letras publishes “Deixei ele lá e vim” (“I left, and he stayed there”).
I have a diploma in french literature from the Université de Nancy, France; a diploma in arts from the Fine Arts Institute of Rio de Janeiro; a masters degree in journalism from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro; and attended classes at Parson’s School of Design, when I lived in New York in the 80′s.
